A Coldiretti analysis presented at Vinitaly revealed that 2021 was a record year for Italian wine.
An excellent year for 2021. Just ask Coldiretti, which presented an analysis at Vinitaly in Verona showing that Italian wine has reached an all-time record in terms of turnover with 13 billion euros, driven in particular by exports and the increase in value of domestic consumption.
Looking at the data compiled by the agricultural association, in fact, it emerges that exports have achieved a net growth of 12% on an annual basis, reaching a total value of 7.1 billion euros; although, to be fair, family purchases also deserve an honourable mention (+2.1% in commercial distribution). The rest, however, is made up of catering and tourism, which were able to make a positive impact on the overall balance despite the difficulties linked to the pandemic. Moreover, it has been confirmed that per capita consumption in Italy is around 33 litres per year; consumption that now, as never before, is focusing on quality, the history of wine and the link between the territory and its production.
Speaking of production: 70% of Italian bottles are Docg, Doc and Igt, with 32 wines with controlled denomination of origin (Doc), 76 wines with controlled and guaranteed denomination of origin (Docg), and 118 wines with typical geographical indication (Igt), while only the remaining 30% are table wines. Numbers that make Italy number one in the world for wine production (ahead of France and Spain), which last year reached almost 48.2 million hectolitres. Will Italian wine be able to maintain this positive projection in 2022?
