Description
Rosso di Montalcino Biondi Santi is produced from specific parcels of land on the Greppo Estate, Vigna Ribusuoli and Vigna Pievecchia, which are between 5 and 10 years old, from a particular type of Sangiovese Grosso grape, clone BBS11 (Brunello Biondi Santi, vine no. 11), expertly identified and selected by the Biondi Santi. Originally this wine was known as Brunello Etichetta Bianca and was renamed Rosso di Montalcino in 1983 when the DOC was established. The vintage had a rainy spring that tended to be cool and led to a slow growth of the buds and a late flowering followed by a rather hot and dry June and July. Around the middle of July, northerly winds managed to cool the temperatures for a few days, with the help of a refreshing thunderstorm. August was hot and dry with some rain at the end of the month, providing ideal conditions for ripening during the days leading up to the harvest.
Vinification and Maturation
Harvesting began on 14 September, and was carried out in a few days, strictly by hand. After this first operation, the actual vinification process takes place. It is matured for at least 12 months in Slavonian oak barrels.

Tasting Notes | In the glass it has a vivid ruby red colour. On the nose, fresh and energetic notes of cherry, blood orange, pomegranate, violet and honeysuckle stand out, followed by balsamic hints of herbs, liquorice root and menthol. On the palate, crisp tannins and lively acidity lend both lightness and substance to the fruity heart of this Rosso, guiding us towards a savoury, lingering finish punctuated by mineral notes. The longer the wine is left to oxygenate in the glass, the more the complexity and depth of this wonderful vintage is revealed. |
