Description
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Biondi Santi, produced from the Greppo vineyards that are between 10 and 25 years old and also from the oldest vines, from a particular type of Sangiovese Grosso grape, clone BBS11 (Brunello Biondi Santi, vine no. 11), identified and selected with expertise by the Biondi Santi, is only vinified in years considered exceptional. It was a hot and not very rainy year with high temperatures from May to August, which allowed the vines to produce very concentrated grapes, perfect for wines of great class. At the beginning of September, the tramontana wind gave the vines a moment of freshness and refreshment before the final stage of ripening, which was characterised by considerable thermal exchange between day and night, typical of our high hillside vineyards.
Vinification and Maturation
Harvesting began on 21 September, more than 10 days later than average, and was carried out in a few days, strictly by hand. After this first operation, the long process of vinification proper takes place. Vinification takes place in vertical Slavonian oak barrels using indigenous yeasts from the vineyards. It is then matured for at least three years, followed by refinement in the bottle.

Sommelier Suggestion | We recommend pouring the wine into the decanter for a few hours to allow the wine to aerate to awaken all the aromas. This wine is one of the great Italian red wines particularly suitable for ageing. Remarkable already if drunk now, but we suggest to let it rest in the cellar to reach a full and harmonious maturity, with important aromatic evolutions. Ageing capacity of over 25 years. |
Tasting Notes | In the glass it is a brilliant red colour with marked garnet hues. On the nose, the fruit immediately reveals itself to be intense and compact with dark cherry, pomegranate and blood orange, so typical of Biondi Santi wines, while notes of Mediterranean scrub give off hints of thyme, rosemary and sage. Floral sensations, of red roses and violets, and then undergrowth are added later. In the mouth, it seduces the taste buds, spreading over the palate with caressing sweetness, while the pleasantly scratchy tannins emphasise its considerable structure and contribute to creating a lovely sensation of freshness that cleanses the palate, leading towards a very long, savoury aftertaste. |
