Description
Pian delle Vigne Vignaferrovia Brunello di Montalcino Riserva by Antinori, with this 2015 vintage will be remembered as a great year for all producers in Montalcino. This Brunello is produced only in the best vintages from a small vineyard of about 4 and a half hectares, adjacent to the ancient station of Pian delle Vigne, resting on a soil that tends to be clayey and calcareous, rich in small stones. It was not produced in 2005, 2008, and 2011.
Vinification
The harvest took place in the first week of October. Careful selection of the bunches of grapes and favourable weather conditions ensured that the grapes arrived in the cellar intact and ripe. The grapes, destemmed and softly crushed, were transferred to stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation took place. Maceration lasted an average of 20 days, with subsequent malolactic fermentation.
Refinement
Once in wood, the wine began its maturation. Its evolution took place over a period of more than two years, starting with small, partly new 5hl barrels and growing to 30 hl. At the end of the maturation period, Vignaferrovia was bottled and continued its long ageing in the bottle.

Sommelier Suggestion | We recommend decanting a few hours in advance to allow the wine to air out and awaken all the aromas. This wine is one of the great Italian red wines particularly suitable for ageing. Remarkable already if drunk now, but we suggest to let it rest in the cellar to reach a full and harmonious maturity, with important aromatic evolutions. Ageing capacity of over 15 years. |
Tasting Notes | In the glass it has a ruby red colour. The nose is rich and complex. Notes of red fruit combine with those of fig jam, dates and citrus marmalade. Floral hints of lavender, delicate balsamic and iodine aromas, and slight hints of resin, sandalwood, chocolate and cinnamon complete the bouquet. The entry into the mouth is soft and characterised by silky tannins. A fine, energetic, vibrant wine, characterised by excellent persistence and freshness. |
Pairing Advice | |
Pairing | Ideal to be enjoyed with meats with a good fat content, such as pork, lamb, goose and beef with strong marbling. A worthy companion to accompany large stews and game. |
